Tour the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum: Hands-On Energy Adventure

Climb aboard a real piece of Gulf Coast industrial history at the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum — a retired jack-up drilling rig permanently docked on Pier 19 in Galveston Harbor. This unique floating museum offers a fascinating, hands-on look into the offshore oil and gas industry that helped shape Texas and the nation. Just a short, scenic drive from your luxury beachfront beach house, it’s a standout attraction for curious minds, families, and anyone interested in engineering, energy, and maritime history.

The Story of the Ocean Star Rig

The Ocean Star was built in 1969 at the Bethlehem Shipyard in Beaumont, Texas. Originally designed as a mobile jack-up rig for ODECO (Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company), it spent 15 years working in the Gulf of Mexico (1969–1984), operating in water depths up to 175 feet and drilling more than 200 wells.

After its retirement from active service, the rig was purchased in 1995 by the Offshore Energy Center. Following a major refurbishment, it opened to the public as an educational museum in April 1997. Today, the Ocean Star serves as the Gulf of Mexico Offshore Energy Center, permanently retired and moored in Galveston Harbor where it continues to educate thousands of visitors each year.
